Frequently Asked Questions

Now listen up, I learned all of this from reading tutorials on the internet, so there's no reason why you shouldn't do the same! That's what you do when you want to learn a new skill, you read about it! So instead of being asked, here is some reading to do. Now READ IT!! Also, tutorials for BJD face ups apply to plastic/vinyl dolls most of the time, so you can read about both of them.

What do you use to remove the makeup?
I use Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner I'm sure there are fine alternatives. Some people use nail polish remover-I tried it once and it didn't remove anything. A lot of companies really seal their paint WELL and W&N works. On plastic-bodied dolls, DO NOT get W&N on the body-it will dissolve it! On resin bodies, of course it's fine.

What do you use to paint?
I rarely use paints anymore, but when I do, I just use misc acrylic paint. I don't have a brand. I stick to chalk pastels and watercolor pencils. For pastels I use Rembrandt (plus some Blick ones I had before I started this hobby). For watercolor pencils I use Derwent. I hear Faber Castel has good pastels and watercolor pencils, but I haven't used them. For gloss again, I use misc acrylic paint. Tamiya is a highly recommended brand. For gloss it's most important that the humidity and temperature are...well, nice, otherwise the gloss will get sticky.

What do you use to seal the new face?
Mr. Super Clear flat, aka MSC is the one. Or MSC uv cut flat, which is more expensive, but has UV protection. Personally I have had problems with UV cut not drying properly-I think it's much more sensitive to heat, so if you have to have it shipped to you, get it from a seller in your own country, and don't do it during the summer heat.

There are other brands, but MSC has had the most testing on resin and I think yellows the least overtime. I've tried Testers Dullcote and I didn't like it. Not nearly as much tooth as MSC. There's another sealant called Purity Seal that I think is more common in Europe, I don't know much about it but I've heard good things. Vallejo non-toxic sealant was terrible, don't waste your time.

>Does the smell go away after it's dry?
Yeah. I mean, if you stick the doll's face up your nose you'll be able to smell it, but how often is that really gonna happen? After a few days, sometimes weeks depending on the material, it goes away entirely.

How do you do [whatever]?
Experiment!!

If you have any other questions, ask me and I'll add it. Please keep in mind, I am fairly new to this hobby, I've only been doing it for a few months now so I am certainly not an expert on anything. I experiment every single day!

Your dolls are gorgeous!  I am going to try a couple Bratz or MonsterHigh doll makeovers, to bring the sexy factor way down for my sweet 5 year old daughter.  After repainting and sealing, are they durable enough for play?  TIA!
